Soomer & Iozzo Take The Positives From World Supersport Encounters At Motorland Aragon
18th and 22nd Hannes Soomer and Dino Iozzo ensured that it was a positive start to the European season for Racedays at the 5.077km MotorLand Aragon circuit near Alcaniz in Spain earlier today.
Soomer, the reigning ESS Champion battled hard throughout the weekend gaining confidence with the significant steps made and once again making some decisive moves as the race progressed. Contesting the full WorldSSP series in 2018 the #38 rider knows that the results will come and with round four at Assen in the Netherlands less than a week away is ready to open his points tally at the Cathedral of Speed.
The WorldSSP300 championship kicked off this weekend too with South African rookie Dino Iozzo showing that with a bit more experience he could be one to watch. Racing in a championship that has on paper more than 15 potential race winners is a daunting prospect but Dino took it in his stride and despite a small crash in FP1 did everything asked of him. Just missing out on a top twenty there is an air of optimism ahead of round two at Assen next week.
Hannes Soomer – 18th:
“We’re still looking for the set-up to allow me to ride how I know I can. We’re understanding more with every session and I hope for Assen we can be racing for at least top 12. The race start was good but some mistakes in the first laps lost me some time. I was able to find a good rhythm by the end of the race and passed 4 riders for 18th at the end. Not where we want to be but we’ll keep working.”
Dino Iozzo – 22nd:
“It was a pretty hard start to the weekend for me with a crash in FP1 so I didn’t get to learn the track. We went into FP2 with heads up and we managed to make some progress. I qualified 34th so I knew I had to keep my head up and I eventually finished in 22nd. Overall the race was really positive and I can’t wait for Assen.”
Mike Dickinson – Team Manager:
“A positive weekend for both riders. We’ve moved a step forward with Hannes’ bike setup and but for a few mistakes early in the race we would have been in a points scoring position. Dino after a nervous start settled down bringing his ‘A’ game for the race, finishing a creditable 22nd in his first World Championship event after a great 4 way battle throughout the race. Thanks to the team for their hard work and to our sponsors support, we look forward to moving forward at Assen.”
